Problems on The Grid

Just a heads up to let everyone know that the hosting provider for the Spooks Fan Blog is currently updating their systems, and this seems to be causing some intermittent problems with the site. Occasionally you may encounter a “database error” when attempting to load a page. If you hit reload/refresh it should come back online. I’m not sure how long this is going to go on for, or whether their maintenance work is indeed the source of the problem. Will have to get Tariq to look into it and report back…

The Grid

I just noticed that the web hosting provider I moved this blog too (Media Temple), calls its cluster based hosting package the Grid-Service. Sweet! The Spooks Fan Blog has quite literally moved to the GRID! It is secure, reliable and staffed by people who “work in I.T.” Hmmmm..

Moving In: Goodbye Blogger, Hello WordPress

Lucas North, moving in

The Spooks Fan Blog has just taken up residence on its own domain. To those who generously offered to help us settle in with macaroons, now’s the time to bring em round! Things may look a little messy for a while as I sort out things behind the scenes (with Malcolm’s help, of course). As far as I can tell the migration from Blogger to WordPress has gone smoothly. If you’re an RSS feed subscriber, hopefully you’re still receiving us loud and clear. If you go to the old blogspot address you’ll be automatically directed to the new domain. One downside of moving is that the polls are now closed, but the results have been saved and I’ll be posting them soon.

UPDATE: Heartbreak! Only a minority of the comments have migrated across. ERGH! Will see what I can do.

UPDATE II: Saved! I had to resort to remigrating the blogger blog to WP old school style because the new school way didn’t work too well. So relieved to see all the comments back in their rightful place. It’s super late (4am). Must sleep. Will tinker tomorrow.

Blogger vs WordPress: Time to move the Spooks Fan Blog?

This is a non-spooks post for the fellow bloggers out there. I’m feeling increasingly frustrated by the limitations of the blogspot blogging platform. When I started this blog I didn’t know whether I would stick with it or indeed whether it would attract a readership. I’m so pleased that the blog has progressed nicely. I really enjoy reading all your comments and are so grateful for your continued interest and support. It’s so much fun!

The past few days I’ve been thinking about whether to move this blog onto a its own domain and migrate the blog onto the WordPress platform, which is much more sophisticated than blogger. A little of my “back story” that puts this in context – in a past life I was a web designer. Even though I have since moved into another profession, I still keep abreast of web design developments, keep my skills relatively up to date, and help others with their blogs/sites from time to time. Starting a blog on blogger was a bit of an experiment for me, as I normally work with WordPress. I could do so much more with WordPress, especially in terms of highlighting past posts and content. Blogger is quite limited on that front.

Anyway, this rambling about Blogger vs WordPress could go on forever. My question to you is – if I move the Spooks Fan Blog to a new location; will you move with me? I haven’t moved a blogger blog to self-hosted WordPress before, but my understanding is I can migrate the entire site, including comments, to the new platform quite seamlessly. Spooksfanblog.com here we come?

Season 8, Here I Come!

If there is one thing that we have learned from Spooks it is this: Once they’ve got you, it’s not a matter of if you break, but when. Spooks has had me since day one, and this past weekend, I broke. I could not wait for season eight to be aired down under any longer (take note ABC!). Since then I’ve been crawling torrents, downloading megafiles, watching episodes 1-6 and gripping my coffee mug with glee the whole time.

I have previously stated that I am a television purist, who prefers to watch TV series as they go to air each week, rather than watch them online or in one sitting – but the waiting was simply too excruciating, I had to go back on my word.

The problem with watching downloads or DVDs in merely a few sittings, rather than spread out across several weeks, is that you don’t get as much of a chance for each episode to sink into your brain in a way that makes each episode clearly distinguishable. When I watch a bunch of episodes back to back, after a while, my memory tends to meld them together. I am simply not disciplined enough to limit myself to watch, say, one episode a day. I’m too much of a fan geek; I need the controlled delivery of television for a better overall first viewing experience.

I think the global internet age we live in raises some questions about timely television distribution. Spooks 8 aired in the UK in the later half of last year, ending sometime in November (or there abouts). April is now fast approaching and by all reports the ABC (the network that usually airs Spooks in Australia) hasn’t come close to announcing when season 8 of Spooks will be aired in Australia yet, if indeed they have even secured the rights to do so. I enjoy watching some television and I want to see the medium as we know it survive, but if fans are kept waiting too long to see their favourite shows, they are inevitably going to turn to the internet and away from TV – something for television broadcasters to ponder.

I will watch season 8 when it is finally aired in Australia later this year, but I will do so with the bone of contention that this viewing experience ought to have been delivered to this fanatic, and others like me, in a more timely fashion – thank you very much! And what are my thoughts on season 8 so far? Brilliant! But I’ll leave elaboration on that for another post.
