According to Deadline Hollywood, America’s ABC has sealed a deal with Kudos to adapt our beloved TV show Spooks for a US audience.
WHY OH WHY?
Yes, an intelligence spy drama set in America has potential, given the post-S11 world we live in (its not clear whether the US version will feature US or UK intelligence officers). Do I trust Americans to make this kind of drama in sensitive, non-hysterical and balanced manner? Not really. America makes great drama, exceptional drama. Exceptional ORIGINAL drama (Six Feet Under, Dexter, Big Love). But an adaptation? The track record here is not good. I’m still recovering from the trauma I experienced from watching that US Red Dwarf pilot.
I hope ABC America proves me wrong. I’d be more optimistic if HBO was tackling the project – but they are probably smart enough to know not to mess with perfection! If Americans’ can’t dig Spooks ‘as is’, sod ‘em.
Thank you to Musa for the tip off!
